Common questions

Questions people ask

Straight answers about how these plans work. Tap a question to open it.

What's the difference between these plans?

AccidentWise pays a set cash amount for each thing that happens after an accident, like $1,500 for an ER visit, no matter what the bill is. Accident ProGuard and Accident ProGap work differently: they pay back your actual accident medical bills, after a $250 deductible, up to a yearly amount you choose. Both of those also pay a lump sum if you're diagnosed with a covered critical illness.

Do these work with my health insurance?

Yes. All three pay on top of whatever your health insurance pays, and the money goes to you. For ProGuard and ProGap, you send the Explanation of Benefits from your health plan with your claim. That shows your actual charges after discounts.

Is this health insurance?

These are limited-benefit supplemental plans from Golden Rule Insurance Company, a UnitedHealthcare company. They help with costs your health plan leaves behind, but they aren't major medical coverage and they don't count as ACA coverage.

Can I get covered if I have health conditions?

Yes. AccidentWise, Accident ProGap, and Accident ProGuard GI have no health questions. Accident ProGuard asks a few simple health questions. For critical illness, and for ProGap's illness hospital benefit, a condition you had in the 12 months before your plan started isn't covered during your first 12 months.

When does coverage start?

Accident benefits cover accidents that happen after your plan starts. The critical illness benefit has a 30-day wait in most states, and ProGap's illness hospital benefit does too. Cancer diagnosed in days 31 to 90 pays 10% of the benefit, then the full amount after that.

How do I get paid?

You file a claim, ideally within 30 days, and the benefit is paid to you. It's your money to use however you need: medical bills, your deductible, rent, groceries, or lost wages.

Is my family covered the same way?

On AccidentWise, each covered person gets the same benefit amounts. On ProGuard and ProGap, accident and AD&D amounts are the same for everyone, but a spouse or child gets half of your critical illness amount. On ProGap, each covered person can receive the $2,500 illness hospital benefit once a year.

What happens as I get older?

AccidentWise accepts applicants up to age 75, has no maximum age for keeping it, and your premium won't go up because you get older. ProGuard and ProGap accept applicants ages 18 to 64 and can be renewed until age 70. ProGuard's critical illness amount drops by half at age 65.

What isn't covered?

Injuries at work, professional or college sports, skydiving and similar activities, racing, being intoxicated, and self-inflicted injuries are some common exclusions. AccidentWise doesn't cover illness at all. ProGuard and ProGap don't cover durable medical equipment, or occupational or outpatient speech therapy. The brochures list every exclusion.

What if I change my mind?

AccidentWise has a 10-day free-look period after the policy is issued. Return it in that time and you get your premium back. Ask me about the free-look period for ProGuard and ProGap in your state.
