Common questions

Questions people ask

Straight answers about how these plans work. Tap a question to open it.

How do these plans work?

When you have a covered hospital stay, ambulance ride, or other service, the plan pays you a set cash amount. It doesn't matter what the hospital charges or what your other insurance pays. You can use the money for anything: your deductible, bills, or everyday costs while you recover.

What's the difference between Base and Max plans?

Base plans (A, B, C) focus on the hospital: an admission payment, a daily amount, observation stays, and ambulances. Max plans (D, E, F) include the same hospital benefits with smaller admission payments, and add office visits, X-rays, and lab tests. D and E also pay for urgent care, and F pays for the ER and one ICU day.

Is there a waiting period?

No. Benefits are available from your first day. Pre-existing conditions are handled separately (see below).

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Not for your first 12 months. That includes conditions you were treated for, got advice about, took medication for, or had symptoms of in the year before your plan starts, and a pregnancy that began before coverage. After 12 months, they're covered like anything else.

Can I use any hospital?

Yes. There's no network. The plan pays the same amount at any hospital or provider you choose.

Do I have to answer health questions?

Allstate's brochure doesn't say. I'll confirm the current application for your state before you apply.

Why does Plan C only pay for 10 days?

Plan C trades length for size: it pays the biggest admission benefit, $5,000, but the $150 daily benefit stops after 10 days. If a long stay worries you more than a short one, Plans A, B, D, E, and F pay daily for up to 31 days.

Does it pay if I have other insurance?

Yes. Benefits are paid in addition to any other medical coverage you have.

What is the LIFE Association?

These plans are offered through the LIFE Association, a not-for-profit membership group. Membership includes extras like travel savings, ID theft protection, and gym discounts. Questions about membership: 800-557-5024.

How long can I keep it?

The plan is guaranteed renewable until age 65, and renews automatically as long as you pay your premium.
